'Ikat', essentially a word of Indonesian origin, is a pattern making technique used in dyeing of textiles. The origin of this technique cannot be ascertained, but scholars claim that Ikat can be traced back to the Indian subcontinent and south east and Central Asia in the early 20th century. You can be spoilt for choice when it comes to the patterns. The patterns are characterized by a certain blurriness that is very visually appealing. This is probably one of the main reasons why Ikat has sustained through centuries.
I had always like the print, but personally I always thought of it as a pattern where a lot is going on! Plus usually the menswear options in Ikat are more on the traditional Indian side, which wasn't enough motivation for me to give it a try! But recently I came across a label called UFF, who took the Ikat and put their own spin on it. UFF menswear by Armaan Kapur is a label for the modern man who is exceedingly classy and never goes unnoticed. It is the perfect blend of bold and subtle. The label displays geometric patterns, bold placements and balance. Which is why, it is quickly becoming one of my favourites.
UFF showcases some really beautiful shirts, kurtas, Nehru jackets, trousers, blazers and suits. So basically it is your one stop for sharp dressing. And the piece that I opted for was this really chic Ikat print shirt. Now let’s talk about why I went for this particular piece. Firstly it's grey, which happens to be favourite colour and it's combination with white is my favourite combination as well! Secondly, the print isn't crowded at all. It’s rather relaxed and well spaced, the print. Thirdly, it looks amazing classy with the mandarin collar. Moreover it isn't like a typically traditional Indian kind of a piece. This one is very versatile and can be styled so well in so many ways. Plus it is highly comfortable and functional if I might add.
While styling this shirt, I really wanted go for a subtle Indian hipster vibe. Like always I wanted to hero the shirt. So it was the accessories that I had to pick to achieve that Indian hipster look. I paired the shirt with a pair of navy slim fit trousers. A pair of grey textured lace up shoes to go with the shirt. A blue holdall bag because bags are great. A black leather strap and golden dial watch to add charatcer. And a pair of golden round sunglasses to finish off the look.
This shirt can be easily styled for an evening setting, a day by the beach, you could take this one for one of your holidays or even sport this on a date. I’m sure the shirt would be a conversation starter. Pair it up with chinos or denims or even shorts. You could also opt for a layered look where only a part of the shirt is seen to create that sense of mystery. And well also for a traditional setting, if you'd like to sport a slightly relaxed and elegant look.
Let me know what you guys thought of this post. And if you'd like me to style this shirt in another way. Also don't forget to check out UFF, I'll be linking it down below in the details.
